Nutrition & Fuel

It is important that each runner is self-sufficient on the day. Please carry your own hydration and nutrition supplies.

As a guideline runners should consume 30-45gms* of carbohydrate per hour (*dependent on body weight, experience and pace):

  • 2 hours – aim to carry 2-3 gels (or equivalent carbs – sports drink, chews, bloks)
  • 4 hours – aim to carry 5-6 gels (or equivalent carbs – sports drink, chews, bloks)
  • 6 hours – aim to carry 8-10 gels (or equivalent carbs – sports drink, chews, bloks)

Read important article by Nutritionist, Tamara Madden, about fuel requirements for endurance run 5-9hrs.

Hydration guidelines should be based on 600mls* per hour (*dependent on your sweat rate, weather conditions and length of event). If you are prone to cramps or sweat excessively – ensure you take on electrolytes and salt tablets.  (Note – there are electrolytes in some gels/sports drinks.)

If you concerned about your nutrition, please contact Tamara Madden at Mad on Nutrition.

Aid Stations

There will be four aid stations along the course, providing water, sports drink, fruit, lollies, potatoes & sandwiches:

  • 8.5km – Aid Station 1 (Scenic Drive)
  • 16km – Aid Station 2 (Mine Camp Drive)
  • 20km – Aid Station 3 (Frazer Beach)
  • 30km – Aid Station 4 (Mine Camp Drive)

Surround yourself with Royals

What an absolutely incredible morning!  I feel truly humbled, inspired and motivated – hence the blog.

It started at 6am with our BEXI runners heading off for their Saturday long run training for Blackmores Running Festival. The morning was lighter and the temps were perfect for running – that feeling of Spring was in the air. I parked up at Billarong Reserve to greet our runners with fuel/refreshments for their long run. While waiting I bumped into 2 lovely ladies who were preparing for their long run – they were off to do 32km in training for their Berlin Marathon. Lesley Wilson (Mosman) and Jude O’Shea (Balgowlah).

Obviously we got chatting about Berlin – which then soon became a conversation about all the marathons they have run — New York, Athens, Chicago, London, Boston, etc.  Wow!!! Inspired and energised about all their accomplishments, the conversation rapidly flowed about their experiences with each marathon:

  • New York – the supporters across the various boroughs. Choral singers in Harlem, Hip Hop rappers in the Bronx, silence in the Jewish Quarter.
  • Boston – the bomb going off after Lesley crossed the line. The shock, the bewilderment, the camaraderie of the running community. *
  • Athens – the basic fuel stations (in the early days). From buckets of water to dip into, to sponges soaked in water, to coke. This was Jude’s first marathon – she smashed it in 3.08.
  • London – the amazing atmosphere! Bumping into Will and Kate,  stopping to take selfies. Then having friends send you pics of you taking a selfie with the royals – too funny! (That’s Lesley in the pic to the right.)
  • Kona – Jude turned to triathlon for a while and competed at Kona twice! She then went off to have 4 x children (!), and is now coming back to running – for the enjoyment.

All such humble, passionate, beautiful stories and covered this in a space of 10mins – while warming up. Oh… and the other amazing fact was that Lesley did not know about Narrabeen Lake! This morning was her first run around the lake.

Such a beautiful experience! I love surrounding myself with these amazing people and such an incredible community.

You are…  the people you surround yourself with!

* If you haven’t watched the movie documentary about the Boston bombing – watch it!

Ready for a Marathon?

I often get asked “Do you think I can run a marathon?” My answer – “if you can run a half-marathon, you can run a marathon!”  Trust me, this is not a case of me saying…”Rah, rah you can do it if you set your mind to it!” (Which of course is very true.) Marathons are hard! They are humbling. They are physically exhausting. They will break you physically and mentally.

But with the right training and preparation, a marathon is THE most special experience ever. Words cannot express that feeling of crossing the line and achieving something incredibly special. It is something that everyone should experience in their life.

So what does it take to be ready for a marathon? Here are my top-5 tips for considering a marathon:

  • Run consistently for at least a year. Your body is better prepared – it is stronger, more efficient and will be able to adapt to the demands of the sport. On the flipside, if you are starting from a fairly sedentary level, you will be vulnerable to injury that could prevent you from running for months (or years).
  • Commitment. Training for a marathon takes approximately 20 weeks. During which you are running 4-days per week. The days you are not running, you need to focus on strength training.
  • Buy-in from your family. Goes without saying – you will need the support from your family. They will need to be there to cover things for you when you are out training, or let you rest up after a long run. It’s a big ask – but it’s not often you run a marathon.
  • Awareness of the risks. The marathon is a big distance and not to be taken lightly. Injuries are very common. It is important to follow a periodised training program that includes body maintenance (rest days/weeks), strength training and biomechanical check-ups.
  • How bad do you want this? If this is something that you’ve always wanted to do; get excited talking about it; get butterflies in your tummy thinking about it; dream about doing it… then it is definitely a ‘HELL YES’ moment!

You will be a fundamentally changed person. You will discover the marathon is one of the mostlife affirming experiences you’ve ever had.

“The marathon was everything I hoped it would be and more! If any of you are thinking about doing a marathon, I would say do it! You will certainly find out what you are made of. The lessons it taught me about determination and perseverance will never be forgotten. If you believe in yourself you can do anything!”

Peita Hillman, New York Marathoner 2016

“What a fabulous run I had yesterday competing in the New York Marathon. I’m so proud to have ticked off one of the world’s major marathons (only 5 left to go). The crowds the entire way were amazing. They really made you feel as though you were a celebrity and their energy was honestly the best! Everyone needs to DO a marathon in their lifetime! Everyone! I finished the race by running past another Aussie in Central Park. I said “C’mon Aussie, we have 2.5kms to go you can’t walk now. Just go left, right, left, right”. We did it! I’m such a proud marathoner! The best bucket list tick ever!”

Sarah Jefferson, New York Marathoner 2016

“Self-belief and hard work got me to the start line. I committed to my tested plan and drew in the energy of the awesome NY crowd.  I was high-5’ing and blowing them kisses. The thrill of the experience is hard to describe as the body and mind were constantly battling each other. Yesterday I ran out of my comfort zone and had the time of my life! I am a marathoner… a very happy one!”

Sue Addison, New York Marathoner 2016

Top 5-Tips for choosing your Running Shoes

Running is one of the least expensive forms of sport, all you need is a good pair of running shoes and you’re off.  Yet, so many people resist investing in a good pair of shoes.

I speak from experience. My first ever pair of proper running shoes were from a specialist running shop in Jo’burg (owned by an ex-elite SA runner) – they were Asics Gel Kayano. I remember clearly baulking at having to pay such an obscene amount of money. Those shoes were worn until they were totally dead!

Some (umm, many!) years later… and many, many more shoes later, I can truly say that proper running shoes are the BEST investment you can make to boost your love for running.

Having recently swapped my ‘retired’ Asics with a fabulous new pair of Hokas, from an awesome specialist running store, I was inspired to share my top tips for choosing new running shoes.

My top 5-tips for choosing your running shoes

  • Find a specialist running shop near you. These are typically your ‘boutique’ stores, not your high-street retail stores. As a specialist store, they are staffed by runners who understand about ‘running’. They have been trained by the different brands and are familiar with the latest shoe technology available.
  • Take your current running shoes with you to the store. Don’t get embarrassed if they are somewhat ‘retired’ and unsightly. Your old shoes are a good indicator of how you run. The sales consultant will be able to identify your running-style – i.e. pronate, supinate, heel-striker, forefoot-striker, etc. This is invaluable for matching you to a suitable shoe.
  • Be sure to also take a pair of your running socks. You will be running in these socks, so it is good to try them on with your new running shoes. The sales consultant can also give you advice in terms of whether they have good padding, breathability & blister protection.
  • Discuss your running goals with the sales consultant. If you are new to running, planning to run a marathon, or taking to the trails – you will need totally different shoes. A sales consultant from a specialist shoe shop, will have an excellent understanding of the different types of shoe to support your running goals.
  • Ensure you try on and test all the shoes recommended by the sales consultant. Don’t be shy! I have been known to try on box-loads of shoes. Each shoe will have a different feel, so lace them up and head out for a short run. Again, a specialist store will allow you to go for a short run outside to ensure you have the right shoe. Now I know we are all drawn to funky colours, designs and are brand-loyal – don’t let that sway your decision. You will know which shoe is right for you – listen to your comfort.

As a guideline, running shoes typically last for approximately 700/800km. This is entirely dependent on your running style, how hard you are on your shoes, and the type of training you are doing. At this stage, the support and cushioning in your shoes are hugely reduced and you are vulnerable to injury. Which is something runners REALLY want to avoid.

Our preferred BEXI special running store is Pace Athletic in Manly and/or Mosman. Pop in and say you’re a BEXI athlete and you’ll receive a 10% discount off your shoe purchases.

PS: perhaps now is a good time to write your letter to Santa ?

Get Hatched or go Bad!

We’ve had a booming start to 2016 – and pretty soon our first term is going to be over. Boom, just like that! Which is why the topic of our blog is so timely.

“We cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.”

What does this mean?

In order to progress, we need to change.  We all love our day-to-day routines – wake up,cup of tea, breakfast, kids to school, head to work… etc. But if we all lived our lives following the same status quo… well, guess what?! We are going to get what we’ve always gotten – fact!

My story

Heading into 2016, my life was pretty hectic. Running a business, prioritising family, moving house (stress!), focusing on health/fitness… the list was endless. Whilst I was trying to advocate a balanced lifestyle… I was the one running ragged. My head was deep underground (or Facebook rather) and the important things in life were passing me by. I needed to take control and make some changes.

Affecting change

Change is hard! Especially when it comes to taking a step back from something that you have loved and nurtured for over 5yrs. Our BEXI community means the world to me – it is my second-family. I have forged some incredibly deep and meaningful friendships. But I knew that I needed to take a step back in order to progress forward.

Running is my passion – I live it, I breathe it, I love it!  This is going to be my main focus moving forward. Coaching beginner runners; athletes training for half-marathons/marathons/ultras; and writing on-line programs for those who have their own personal goals.

Triathlon is my other passion – there is something really special about this sport. I am going to be partnering with recognised coaches to coach beginner triathletes – Sarah Anne Evans & Sue Bennett. Building confidence across the three disciplines (swim, bike, run), progressing to sprint/olympic and eventually long course distances. We will also be writing on-line programs for those who have their own personal goals.

Strength & conditioning classes are the key change. These classes will be relocated to our partner, Active Lifestyles, Collaroy. Marcel Soares is a recognised Holistic Coach & Exercise Specialist. He has a wealth of experience, particularly with athletes recovering from injuries. I feel truly confident that my BEXI athletes will be extremely well cared for by Marcel and his team.

What next?

Our Summer term comes to an end this Friday (8 April), we will have a short break over the school holidays and then reconvene on Tues 26 April for our Autumn term. In the meantime, our Race-FIT and Tri-FIT athletes will continue training for their upcoming races. On Sunday we will be cheering our BEXI runners taking on the Canberra Half-Marathon — go team!

On signing off, I want to say a heartfelt thanks for all your support over the past 5yrs. I’m feeling energised and excited about the upcoming new term and look forward to supporting you little by little, until a little becomes A LOT!
