The Road to Coastrek – friends, fitness and coffee!

In just two weeks, at 7am on Friday the 6th of March 2015, a small group of our Beauty of Exercise (BEXI) community will begin the final phase of an incredible Coastrek adventure that started almost exactly six months ago. In September 2014, the call was put out among the BEXI community for any brave souls who would be interested in walking 55 kilometres from Palm Beach to Balmoral – to raise awareness about our gorgeous coastline and raise money for the Fred Hollows Foundation. The BEXI-Trekkers was born. With great excitement Lucia Hains, Liza Dukino, Lisa Bale and I (Kristin Prescott) signed up. We knew eachother, but with every kilometre of training it wasn’t only our fitness that grew, so did our friendship. The BEXI community rallied behind us, supporting us during walks and fundraising – but then came a crushing blow. An injury ended Liza’s walking journey. Gutted as she was, she embodied the BEXI spirit – shifting into the role of super support crew and we welcomed the lovely Kym Gray into the team. Now with just one big training walk to go, The BEXI-Trekkers are nearing the end of this challenging but rewarding journey. But none of us will ever lose the bond that’s been forged along beaches, over headlands, boardwalks, ocean trails and through plenty of laughter … and coffee!

Come swim with us!

If you are injured, just starting out with fitness or you are looking to build your confidence and efficiency in the water, then our 7-week Swim-FIT program is for you. Based at Collaroy Pool on the Northern Beaches, the program has a strong focus on water safety, breathing, improved technique, stroke correction and consistent stroke rate. Not only will the course improve your fitness and build your water confidence but it will also prepare you to tackle your first triathlon or ocean swim. – Swim-FIT (Beginner) starts on Fri 6 Feb – Swim-FIT (Intermediate) starts on Tues 3 Feb Our gorgeous coach, Sue Bennett, is passionate about sharing her love for water. Swim-fit is a fantastic compliment to any of Beauty of Exercise’s womens running programs or as a stand alone program.

Thanks for teaching me mummy, I love running now

I received this beautiful email recently from one of our long term members, Cass Warner. So inspiring! Dear Debbie, I can’t help but share this with you. This morning my son, Brad was getting ready for school and I said “Sports day buddy, put on your sport uniform”. He complained, “Awww no, running. I hate running, we have to run up that really, really big hill and it’s so hard!”. It surprised me at first because Brad loves running when he’s playing, but he doesn’t have a competitive bone in his body and he certainly doesn’t rush anywhere. So I thought about it a bit and remembered how much I hated running at school too, always coming last and hating the hills. Then I thought about all the things Debbie has taught us. So I gave him a really quick little lesson in running up hills, “Don’t look at the top and worry how far there is to go, just take each step as it comes and COUNT. Count to 10 then look up, count to 10 then look up. Don’t worry how far to go, you’ll get to the top quicker if you’re not looking at it, count to 10 and look up.” WELL!! When I picked him up from school, we were chatting and I asked how his day was. He said “Awesome, I got a mini merit!!” I said “Fantastic, what for?” “Running!! I did exactly what you said mummy and it worked really, really well!! I didn’t come last, I ran really fast and I actually beat lots of people and they gave me a mini merit. Thanks for teaching me mummy, I love running now.” Tell you what. My heat melted. Thanks for your tips Deb, they extend further than you could imagine…

Running really is awesome!

One of our beloved members, Sarah Jefferson, recently shared this photo and her thoughts with our group… It is amazing to look back and realise what we all have achieved! This is me for the past 2.5 years! From moving to Sydney not knowing a soul and not being able to run to completing Tough Mudder, a triathlon, 5 half marathons in 4 different states, meeting some of the most inspiring people and making life long friends – running really is awesome!
