We’re celebrating Mother’s Day in a very special way this year. On Sunday 9 May 2021, our BEXI friends will be teaming up with Running Stars to complete our very own Mother’s Day Fun Run. We’ll be running distances ranging across 2.5km, 5km or 10km – with the goal of raising awareness for breast cancer. This is a disease that is very close to our hearts, as many of our BEXI friends and families have had their lives affected by breast cancer.
A few of our special BEXI friends have offered to share their personal journeys with breast cancer – from being diagnosed, to the treatment and their learnings from the experience. Each story is powerful and very poignant…
Moira Dunsmore
We had a history of breast cancer in our family. It wasn’t real to me until my older sister (aged 45) was diagnosed. Then I took it more seriously and started having mammograms around the age of 43. I was having my second mammogram when I was told I had breast cancer. There was no lump, I was feeling super healthy at the time. The radiologist said he thought it was a malignancy and booked a biopsy for the Monday. |

Six years ago I sat in front of my doctor as she instructed my husband: “You have to listen carefully as Fiona won’t hear much of what I’m about to say”. I had dense breasts, which increases your risk of cancer, so I was having mammograms earlier than the recommended age of 50. The lump that led me to the check-up was a cyst but hiding in the other breast there was cancer. In fact, as an MRI would reveal one week later, 3 cancers. |

Just over 4 years ago, I found a lump and I thought I should get looked at. I was really not worried about it, as my thoughts were that it was nothing sinister. My GP suggested I get a mammogram and an ultrasound. A week later, I had the mammogram but nothing could be seen as I had very dense breast tissue. I then had an ultrasound and they found a few other lumps they wanted investigated further. |

Our BEXI community is passionate about supporting those who are affected by breast cancer. We’ll be teaming up on Sunday 9 May, 7am with Running Stars in Curl Curl – where we will be running together to show our support for our friends who are travelling this very difficult road.
Every day 55 Australians are diagnosed with breast cancer and 8 Australians will lose their life to it. Our BEXI goal is to raise a combined total of $2,000 to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) – which will support life-saving research to improve breast cancer detection, develop new treatments, and allow people with breast cancer to live longer and better lives.
If you are able to make a donate to support this cause – together we can help make a difference. Thank you for your support.
