We’ve added a new date as our previous workshop sold out!  Next one is Sat 20 Nov 2021, 7-9am.

Our Learn-to-Trail Run workshop is aimed at runners who are looking to build running confidence on the trails. We will give you the tools and knowledge to run our stunning local trails with confidence, enjoyment and exhilaration!

What is covered in our workshop?

We will teach you:

  • the basics of trail running and how it differs from road running
  • specific techniques for running on variable terrain
  • skills for mastering single track
  • techniques for tackling stairs, climbing and descending
  • dealing with obstacles

In addition, we will offer guidance on correct footwear, equipment, as well as nutrition and hydration. We will run for a total of 6-8km on the day.

How is the workshop structured?

Our 2hr workshop will take place on Sat 20 Nov at Clontarf Reserve, starting 7am. We will run on the Spit to Manly track which will include single track, stairs and wider trail pathways. During the workshop we will discuss trail running techniques, including climbing and descending. We will be stopping during the running to discuss these – so it’s not a ‘workout’ but rather learning of techniques. We will return by 8.30am, where we will have 30 minutes to discuss equipment, logistics and fuelling. The workshop will conclude by 9am.

Meet our Coach – Tamara Madden

Tamara Madden is an experienced trail runner and endurance athlete. Having taken up the sport 10yrs ago, she has run numerous marathons and ultra-marathons – including the flagship Ultra-Trail Australia (50km x2; 100km x2).

Tamara’s proudest trail running moment was completing the 100km in just under 14½ hrs – placing her in the top 30 females and 9th in her age group.

Tamara is also  a very successful Qualified Nutritionist specialising in sports nutrition – Mad on Nutrition.

Passion. Purpose. Progress.

Announcing our super-exciting BEXI Workshop Series to support these challenging times!

Over the past few months, we have been feeling deflated, struggled with motivation, and missing our mojo. Holidays have been cancelled, events postponed, and social-distancing imposed. With so much change happening around us, it is really challenging to feel motivated and energised.

Added to all this uncertainty, we also feel that we aren’t good/smart/qualified ‘enough’ to achieve certain things in life. Or we feel ‘small’ in the company of others, and that someone is going to find out we have no idea what you’re doing?

This got us talking to a highly regarded mindset expert, which resulted in our latest BEXI workshop series – Passion. Purpose. Progress.

We are thrilled to be working with Jen Brown – Performance & Mindset Expert who helps people build endurance and create results that last. Jen is also one of Australia’s leading experts on the Imposter Complex. Many of us already know Jen as the founder of Sparta Chicks – an online community for female endurance athletes and outdoor adventurers. (We love Sparta Chicks!)

What is covered in this workshop series?

This exciting workshop series covers two important topics that are highly relevant to our lives right now:

1. Goal setting during uncertain times

We explore:

  • our values and what is important to us
  • what’s inside our control and how to focus on it
  • why we started running/training in the first place and why we stick with it (even when the times get tough), and
  • what alternative challenges we could set to stay motivated, focused, and energised.
2. Outsmarting our Imposter

We explore:

  • what the Imposter Syndrome is
  • how it impacts us – in our life, career and sport
  • its relationship to the fear of failure and perfectionism
  • why fear isn’t a bad thing, and
  • how to outsmart it so it doesn’t hold you back.

Meet Jen Brown (and hear her excitement!)

How is this workshop series structured?

Each topic will consist of 2 x 45min zoom sessions, delivered fortnightly on Thursday mornings (6.15am-7am). The first session will introduce the concept and the second session will build deeper. The sessions are interactive and provide you with practical strategies to implement straight away.  The workshop series will be limited to a maximum of 25 participants – which will enable engagement, connection and conversation between participants.

What are the dates?
  • Goal setting during uncertain times – Thurs 7 Oct and Thurs 21 Oct
  • Outsmarting our Imposter – Thurs 18 Nov and Thurs 2 Dec

Who is this workshop series for?

For women who:

  • are struggling to stay motivated
  • need new goals to stay focused
  • struggle with fear and self-doubt
  • get stuck in procrastination or perfectionism
  • have ambitious goals or are goal-orientated by nature
  • want to show up authentically and enjoy life without fear and shame.

What is your investment?
  • BEXI members – $85 for 4 x sessions
  • Non-Members – $100 for 4 x sessions

→ This workshop series will give you the clarity on your ‘why’ and support you with a sense of passion, purpose, and progress – ready to embrace 2022.

How to sum up the UTA50?

19 months in the making.

On, off, back on, back off. An absolute rollercoaster of a journey. We became very resilient during the 19months. Continuing to train, changing goals, adjusting milestones – always moving forward.

The 2021 date was finally confirmed and once again we set out with renewed focus and drive. Fifteen weeks of dedicated training, discovering new trails, bonding with our team and stumbling across many playgrounds!

  • Alexander Street was a curse… but in the end it turned out to be our saviour.
  • The thousands of stairs that we endured during our training in the Blue Mountains was a godsend.
  • The on-course training with Coach Andy Smith (North Shore Running & Fitness) and Blue Mountain Fitness was a game-changer. Knowing exactly what we were in for – and when – was not only humbling… but the necessary evil.
  • The nutrition advice from Tamara Madden was invaluable. Again, highlighting the fact that if you get this wrong – all your training goes down the proverbial (Fuber) stairs.

The weekend finally arrived – as did the cold-front! Race check-in was flawless. Early dinner in the ballroom at The Carrington Hotel (very civilised!) – and then off to bed.

Race morning was freezing cold! Early breakfast, short coach ride to the start – no waiting around – and then we were off. The logistics worked like clockwork. The nervous excitement and atmosphere was electric. It felt so good to be part of an event again. Being surround by like-minded crazy people, in a stunning part of Australia. Very special!

The event was split into 4 key checkpoints – we focused on each one at a time. Fairmont Hotel (17.2km), Queen Vic Hospital (28.4km), Emergency Aid Station (41.2km) and then the finish at Scenic World (50km). The checkpoints were a highlight – the food, the volunteers, the support. Refuelling, adding more layers, adjusting backpacks, fixing bladders, toilet stops, etc.

Banter on the course with other runners is always entertaining. It is so much fun meeting new people and talking about random things. The support and encouragement out on the course is invaluable. A few BEXI runners took a tumble, but they were scooped up and helped back on the trails again.

There were ups and downs – literally and figuratively. Mentally, it was a case of finding our rhythm; fuelling, hydrating, using mindset tools, taking caffeine, digging deep, and soaking up the energy around us to pull us through to the end.

Chasing a dream is a never-ending negotiation. You have to keep navigating, pivoting, adapting and persisting. It’s never in a straight line.

The final kilometre approached! We all knew what was coming – around 1,000 steps to the finish. This required pure mental strength – our physical strength was completely depleted. Mind engaged… and we start counting. One to one hundred. And again! And again!

The end was in sight. The cheering and cowbells from the spectators was sensational! We’re almost there! Keep counting! Keep focused! Keep climbing! Quads screaming, knees hurting… but the cowbells got louder and louder.

Finally, the steps ended and we had a short run on the ramp up to Scenic World. The crowds were going crazy! A burst of energy kicked in and we were being carried away to the finish line!

YES… we can do it! YES… we have got this! YES… WE HAVE DONE IT!!

“Successful people don’t just ride out the Dip. They don’t just buckle down and survive it. No, they lean into the Dip. They push harder, changing the rules as they go. Just because you know you’re in the Dip doesn’t mean you have to live happily with it. Dips don’t last quite as long when you whittle at them.”  Seth Godin (The Dip)

Thank you Ultra-Trail Australia and Blue Mountains National Park for hosting an absolutely phenomenal event. We will be back!
